Urban
travel markets and transport modes in the cities of the developing
world exhibit a rich variety, reflecting dynamic interactions between
demographic, spatial and economic growth processes therein. Walking,
biking and basic public transport services are essential for low-income
urban communities, whereas the higher-income, motorized households and
businesses tend to demand good road networks and high-quality public
transport systems.
The
mission of the Urban Transport Thematic Group of the World Bank is to
monitor and understand these complex happenings in the client cities
and the world, place them in a common perspective, and, in response,
develop a unified strategic framework and, on a selective basis,
relevant guidelines and tools. This overall strategy is used as a
starting point for addressing country- and city-specific situations, in
the context of Bank's advisory and lending assistance to member
governments.
This
site provides links to formal and informal publications of the World
Bank related to the subject of urban transport. Publications are
organized by topic as shown in the left navigation bar of this screen.
All formal reports are also included in the overall transport listing, by publication series.
